Quick Facts

- Official Languages in Kosovo are Albanian and Serbian.

- Language of any community that constitutes five (5) per cent of the total population in any municipality will have the status of an official language.

- Language of any community that constitutes three (3) or more per cent of the total population in any municipality or has been traditionally spoken in a municipality can be used as a language in official use.
 
- In Prizren municipality, Turkish language has a status of an official language, as the traditional language.

Fifth Annual Conference of the International Association of Language Commissioners

Fifth Annual Conference of the International Association of Language Commissioners that will be hosted by the Office of the Language Commissioner of the Republic of Kosovo on May 4th, 2018, in Pristina.

The theme of this year’s conference will be “Multilingualism: value and/or obligation”, which will offer the possibility to exchange ideas and good practices to overcome the challenges in protection and promotion of linguistic rights. Specifically, the focus of the conference will be put on the language status in post conflict societies, enhancement of service delivery in official languages through the active offer, as well as on challenges and possibilities of learning official languages through education.
This international Conference is organized by Office of the Language Commissioner/ Office of The Prime Minister and every year the Conference takes place in diferent countries/members odf the Association.

The International Association of Language Commissioners assists the language commissioners’ role throughout the world by promoting best practice and standards for excellence and by advancing language equality and diversity. The Office of the Language Commissioner is a member of the International Association of Language Commissioners since 2013.

Office of the Language Commissioner was established in April 2012 under auspices of the Office of the Prime Minister, pursuant to Regulation br.07/2012. The Office is mandated to oversee the implementation of the law on languages, works with institutions to improve the implementation of the law and promote and protect the right on the use of the language of all communities in Kosovo.
